Watch the following video: Discuss why this is newsworthy (7 elements)
I found this to news to not really be surprising because some of my friends from N.S. tell me about the stuff that happens at their school. However, an hour or so after the arrest, my grandmother told me the story. I'm not sure how she found out before me, but she must have mad friends.
I found this news interesting because it happend not to far from Lincoln, and it could be happening to anyone. I know people who go to N.S. and they found it shocking because they knew the teacher who did it.
Devin, that kind of sucks that your grandmother has more friends than you. But anyways, this is definitely news worthy because if i was a parent and my child was a student at north smithfield, then i would be mortified and i would want to know if my kid was involved.
i found this story to be extremley news worthy because it is a seriouse case when it gets to court expecally because now there very seriose about sexuall harsment and rape that they want to pervent it from happing to anyone.
This is newsworthy because its local and it will effect students that go to the high school. It will also effect the teacher and his personal/professional life.
This is newsworthy because a teacher was sexing a student and it is horrifying and parents want to protect their children and chris, it is not funny at all.
I agree with Chris Kimball because I also find this very amusing, however I also find this to be a very sensitive topic and so it should not be taken lightly.
I thought this was a very interesting video and news story. I think this is really bad for a teacher to be involved with their students for many reasons. They also found drugs in his home, which makes the situation even worse. Stuff like this should not happen and it is a good thing for the police to crack down for the safety of students and others at the school.
This is newsworthy because the citizens of north smithfield should know what is happening in their city. Not only north smithfield everybody too so if they know the coach then they should stay away. Teachers sexting students is very inappropriate
This artile is newsworthy in several ways. The timeliness is because it just happened, this man was just arrested. The proximity is huge because it has an effect on the whole Rhode Island School District (we would wonder what else is happening in other schools). The magnitude is important because, like I said before, it has an effect on the whole Rhode Island School District and all of these students' families. The human interest concerns anyone in Rhode Island involved in the Schools. This includes students, parents, teachers, and faculty. This is a very unique article because it talks about how a techer is sexting other students, smoking marijuana, and being a negative influence all around. This is also very prominent because of those same reasons. I mean, would you want someone like that teaching YOUR kids? The consequences of these actions are that the families of the students fel shamed, the students are scarred for life, the teacher will most likely lose his coaching job, and the Rhode Island School Department might have to reevaluate who it hires and people who are currently employed.
This is newsworthy because it is an interesting topic and it happened in North Smithfield. Since Rhode Island is a very small state, things that happen in other towns are easily spread.
This is very disturbing but i dont find it very surprising becasue many people and teachers do this and this is not the first time I have heard of a story like this.
This is certainly newsworthy because it involves a teacher acting weird, disquisting, and illegally toward his students. The fact that he would sext students is really gross, obviously that guy has serious problems. It's also surprising because he was a well liked guy and everyone had a positive opinion on him. He seemed to be well respected in the community, and he was even a coach of many sports. If i went to North Kingston i would be surprised and disquisted to find out my teacher did that.
This is newsworthy because you rarely hear about student teacher affairs. And when you do it pops up like once every four years. Another thing that makes this newsworthy is that it happened in our own back yard. But the story's not really surprising at all
This news is nothing new to any of us. Sexting is definitely not socially accepted but it is kind of normal for America's society today. It is sad to think that a teacher would do these kinds of things.. I can sort of understand a young high school girl who does not know better, but it disturbs me to think that a man that is old enough to be a teacher and a coach, he should know not to do things like that. What surprises me is that the student would sext him back. Doesn't she know that if she is a minor she is more than likely going to get caught? This is why I think this video is newsworthy.
This is newsworthy because it is timely (recent) and it is close to home for us, North Smithfield isn't far from Lincoln. It is also of importance or significance. This story is definietely something people would want to know about, because if someone you've known for years and lives in your own town and neighborhood and interacts with your children at school, coaching them and teaching them, and has committed a crime and sexually harrassed your children in some form of way you would want to know. You would want to hear about this story for the safety of your children who may or may not attend this school, and for the teacher / coach to be prosicuted to the fullest extent of the law (if he is proven guilty). This is a serius issue, and it is of human interest because things like this happen all the time, regardless if people get caught or not. But it is more serious between a teacher and a minor, texting is one thing but it has been pushed too far, and they had become a little too close. This has consequence because it is illegal, and both of them (the teacher and student) have got caught for their actions.
In an article i read online, it said that the girl had been in contact with this teacher outside of school via text and online for two years. why was she in contact with him at all? and why did she not say anything about it until now?
i actually went to N.M.S. my experinced there wasnt to bad but i noticed that alot of students had very close realtionships with the teachers. But what this teacher has done is inappropriate and its no excuse for what he did. i think they should investagate in it alot more because there probably is a chance that he has done it to others or mabe went beyond sexting and nasty photo's
I agree with Rose, it also surprised me that the student would sext her teacher back. If a teacher ever did that to me, i would probably throw up, but i wouldn't sext him back? i dont understand why anyone would want to sext anyone in the first place, nevermind sexting teachers..
i find that gross and if i was a parent i would be so mad and horrified. Also it is the student's fault to becuase they were the ones who were texting the teachers online. with is way uncalled for unless you ask about your grade or something.
I find this newsworthy becasue it just happened and it occured in our state of Rhode Island. This will affect people in Rhode Island escpecially the schools. The magnitude of this is a big deal because it shows what teachers doing at that school and the reputation the school has. There will be a big consequence to this and also they found marajuana in his house. People want to know what happens and it makes someone feel about what happens at there childrens school.
I agree with Xinrui because this specifically is newsworthy to me and my peers because it is so close by. I also agree with Michaela; if it was at my school I would feel awkward & uncomfortable, especially if I had known him personally like many at the school said they did.

I agree with rose and michaela, it definitely creeps me out. I mean you hear about students and kids doing this all the time, just a few years ago there was a girl getting caught doing this at the middle school. But an older man who everyone thought was a great guy, teacher and coach, ended up doing this just really bothers you. It makes you realize you just never know about someone.
This article is newsworthy because you dont hear something like this all the time. It is very rare and only the really physco people do something like this. The teacher, Steve Dimeo, is a middle aged man and he is asking High School girls for sexual photographs by mobile devices. That is sickening and if I were the girl's father, I would be so furious.
I definitely agree with everyone saying how if it were my school and a teacher or coach i knew, or even just a teacher or coach at my school i DIDN'T know or wasn't firmiliar with, i would feel so absolutely uncomfortable going to school, and extremelly awkward and freaked out. it's different for girls than it is for guys.

This story is newsworthy beacause it's proximity and timeliness. It happened in North Smithfield, a town right outside Lincoln and coincidentally, the Lincoln Girls soccer team played the North Smithfield soccer team yesterday in the playoffs. The North Smithfield soccer team was affected the most by this article. This event happened in a very bad time for the town of N. Smithfield. Just last week, a middle school student in the town was hit by a car on his bike and the whole town was mourning him. That is why this story is newsworthy.
Viega - I'm sure there was a punishment handed out to the students. But a good question is what was the punishment and was it too strong or not strong enough.
I agree with ryan, who knows what he might have said and done to these students. They could have been threatened or hurt and could have been forced into the situation. It's just good that he has been caught.
this story is not at all FUNNY! its seriose. and yes its has been happing for two years the sexting but in the moment people become shocked she probably wanted something, and thought she probably get it if she din't tell. i dont know ive had always belived that "its never to late" no matter what the cause is she said it when she was ready, i dont think that the girl should be hold ecountable for this precarious situation, because that teacher is old enuff to understand and to know that what he did is not right and that evenually he would have too deal with the conquences
Its recent it happend sometime near now and the future. It's proximity is just down the street it is the border line between us and N.Smithfeild It effect a decent amouth of people cause all his teamates on the team doesn't have a couch and the clases he teach all those poor, poor kids don't have a class. (LUCKY!!! I HATE HISTORY)
This makes me wonder how many people do this and haven't been caught. These students need to know that what they are doing will ultimately hurt them in the long run, when failing a class would be the least of their worries. Besides, if they expose the teachers' behavior, they would get a new teacher and, most likely, wouldn't fail.
why would this teacher put his career in jeopardy by pulling of a stunt like this. This could have been expected out of students (not saying they should) but out of a teacher is not something that should not be tolerated and he deserved the punishment that he recieved.
I agree with Zack and i believe that there is a lot more to the story that either the media is not sharing with us, or the students are just simply still hiding some details.
