"In his words, Rhode Island was like a ship of state, with many different types of passengers, free to worship and think as they pleased, but obligated to work to defend the ship from danger, and to follow a correct course to the right destination."
"there is nothing this state and her people cannot achieve." When Chaffe said this he was talking about the capibilities that the state of rhode island has, and how it is up to the people to make changes for the state of rhode island
"When Roger Williams came to these beautiful shores in 1636, he instantly made this the most democratic place in America, simply by welcoming other dissenters, and by creating a new form of government that valued tolerance and consensus over orthodoxy and compulsion." His message though this quote is about the great acomplishments of roger williams when he first arrived in Rhode island. And how he did so much good for the state and how he is a good example for us to follow today.
It seems that he truly wants to turn RI around and get it going in the right direction. RI is not doing so well right now and that's a problem that needs to be corrected according to Chafee.
That quote shows that L.C. was trying to embody Roger Williams in a way by following some of the beliefs he had. L.C. wants everyone in Rhode Island to be unique; but when the state needs them, they come together as one.
what i would consider the most important quotes would be the ones where he promises to put his energy into change, and fixing RI. "I believe a second chance begins at this very moment…. not just for me, but for our wonderful state of Rhode Island and for each and every one of her citizens. Today, I humbly ask each Rhode Islander to join me in embarking on a new era of opportunity for Rhode Island.

The quotes that are most important are the ones that mean something, or are meaningful and have more importance behind them and are prooving what he is going to do for our state.
"our politics have not lived up to our ideals. That must change. The time of irresponsibility has ended" The theme of this quote is that we as a state have not lived up to our potential and how we have to step it up and make changes in order to be a responsible and well running state.

He says that Rhode Island is very capable of becoming the strong state that it once was and that he can help lead the way for this.

He also wants a unified state without division. This is so we can all work together in getting this state headed in the right direction. He knows this is not possible, but he wants everyone to try."a vibrant, diverse community that is free of political, cultural and ethnic division."

This quote states that although Rhode Island is small and has many problems, it will become one of the greatest states in the country

This quote is important because Lincoln Chafee wants to encourage Rhode Islanders to have a positive outlook on the problems that Rhode Island is currently facing.

This is an important quote because he is asking the people to get involved. He says that Rhode Island can do many things if the people all work together as a community.
"Thank you." These are the two most powerful words in the whole speech. Simply because he is extremely thankful that his fellow rhode islanders elected him to the governor position. It is also a very snazzy conclusion.
"We were the first colony to stand up to the crown by signing the Declaration of Independence. And we were the last to ratify the Constitution as we prudently waited to be persuaded that America’s standard of freedom was as high as our own." This quote states that Rhode Islanders are the greatest and it really is meant to just give us a sense of hope
I think throughout this speech Chafee is trying to get all Rhode Islanders to belive in him and trust him that Rhode Island will become an elite state.
"More than most states, we have known hard times these past few years. We have suffered for reasons that are all too familiar to all of us." In this quote, it shows how Chaffe realizes not everything is perfect right now in Rhode Island.

This is because our govenor is showing that he is committing to work through the hard times as a state. The second quote was "I believe a second chance begins at this very moment" because it shows that no matter how bad people mess up, there is always an opportunity to get back on our feet.

Elected leaders always promise changes and things that they know will be hard to do when running for the position. Yet not all of these promises can be fulilled. When politicians make promises; it sets their people up for disappointment.

I think Chaffe's speech was a very good one. Many political figures promise things will be done that will never happen. Instead Chaffe talked about getting the people involved and bringing RI together.

I believe Mr. Chafee is a man of the people, seeing that he mentioned 'Rhode Islanders" quite a bit throughout the duration of his oration. It seems he wants to move forward together as a whole state and try to create a better society for all citizens.
