Reality or Publicity?

Recently, MTV aired its newest show, Skins.  There is a great deal of controversy surrounding this series.  Read the article regarding this and comment as to what you think.  In addition, why is this so newsworthy?

    This article is very interesting and News worthy, it has some good points to it. I never watched skins, although i saw the previews for it i thought it was stupid and over exxagerrated and dramatic to say that this is the "true life of real american teenagers today". This is newsworthy because it is important to parents as to what their kids are watching on TV today, and this show isn't exactly the greastest thing to be watching. In my opinoin i think it's publicity, and I think that they have a good point with the files being charged about "Child pornography", this show is really different, and it proves this point by the drop in ratings and views by the second episode.

    Although im sure it's fair to say many teens today can in some way relate to the show in one way or another at some point, but it's safe to say the show is over the top and exaggerated a bit. I think the show should have stayed in England

    I do not think that the show is bad. People have a choice whether to watch it or not. It is not 'child porn' because there is no nudity. This show is supposed to capture the life of a teenager. The show was originally from Britain; therefore people in the United States, would not completely understand the view of the show because they are in a different country. The British version of the show is worse than the American one, and that show is still going. AMERICA IS JUST TOO SENSATIVE. This story is newsworthy because it has a lot of controversy, and that is what people love.

    This article is newsworthy because it has human interest, should your kids be watchig this? It has proximity, by now airing in American and on MTV, an extremely popular channel for teens today to watch, so im sure most of them have heard of it or seen it. It has prominence because this show just recently came out, and it has consequence because the show is obviously bringing a lot of controversy and discussion as to weather it should stay airing or not

    In my opinion I do not think Skins is a bad show, but whether it is good or not they do not have any sponsors. If they do not have sponsors MTV is not going to waste 2 million dollars per show to air it. My guess is skins will be off air shortly. These sponsors are dropping the show because they think it is inappropriate even though they knew what was going to be on it. This is the portraying what life is like for some people and is an eye openner. People are just too sensative to some things. I agree with Devin completely.

    Marissa has a good point. The show should have stayed in England, because I dont think the U.S. can handle it. However, for the people that wanted to continue watching it; they can find other ways to do so.

    I think that Skins shouldn't be that big of a deal. Teenagers are exposed to all of the situations in the show. Either at home or out with friends. I'm not saying that all teens are into doing drugs and having sex, but a lot of them are and thats obvious by all the teen pregnancy and overdoses that the US is going through.

    While the newsest MTV show, skins, is realistic its also a little extreme. Having watched the show a few times i know what its about and can see why the Parents Television Network would aim to cancel the show. Skins is supposed to be an inside look on todays teenagers lives, but its not. The teenagers in the show are all basically addicted to many illegal drugs and alcohol. The show makes it seem like this is how all teenagers are, but thats not the case. Skins takes Teenage partying to a whole new level, and if it doesn't settle down a little it should be taken off the air.

    This show is newsworthy because it has human interest. It is important to adults & teenagers alike. It is also interesting how way out of proportion the partying & things they do on the show are. Many things are innopropriate, even for MTV, and because of that MTV is losing millions of dollars per episode. Is it worth it? I think not.

    To me, Skins is reality. I agree with Marissa in the sense that teens today can in some way relate to the show in one way or another at some point. But, I don't think the show should have stayed in England. I think that the show makes some people more aware of the world around them.

    Marissa makes a good point. They say this portrays the life of a "real american teenager". This show is an extreme exxageration of what goes on in teens lives. Also some are saying this is "child porn" and this show is far from it. There is no nudity in the show at all and people are just looking for ways to critisize the show.

    This article is very interesting. I have never seen the show before, though it does seem very inappropriate from the information given in the article. I think that this show, "Skins", is not fit for the American audience primarily because of the controversy it is creating. People in America have strong opinions when it comes to TV shows. The reaction can either be negative, or positive, and many shows rely mainly on the reactions of the audience. If this show is not receiving good reviews, MTV shouldn't continue airing the show.

    I believe that teens are exposed to all of the things on the shows. Most teenagers do the things on that show. If the show is really that bad, they should not have other different shows like it, just because its teenagers and not adults, does not mean it should be canceled. Not saying that i dont Jersey Shore, but that show is just as "worse" as this show. That show is all about drinking and sex, just because they are older people, does not make it right. I believe this show is reality because its things that teens are exposed to everyday.

    This article is newsworthy because it involves huge controversy. Also, i agree with Marissa, this article shows a great amount of human interest. Many kids may watch the show, and think that the things the people do in the show are cool to do, and most likely do the same.

    Also, the British version is way worse than the American version, if the parents/adults watched the british version and came back with feed back about that, i think the trash talking would be way worse.

    I think that this show is pretty bad because of what everybody is saying. This show is a bad influence on kids becasue acording to what people are saying there is a lot of inappropriate things going on such as illegal use of drugs, illegal drugs and sexual content. This is bad because anyone can tune in and watch this. This is newsworthy because this show is not very appropriate for kids and it should not be put on national television were everybody can watch it. Also kids under age that look at this show will want to do some of these things.

    I couldnt agree more with what Devin said. It is peoples choice whether to watch it or not and it does not show complete nudity. I myself do not watch this show but I have heard multiple rave about it on multiple occasions. I also think that it is not peoples business here to judge or talk about what is going on in Britain if apprently that is where the show is taking place. If it was that horrific then I am sure that the British government would not allow it to be aired.

    I also find it very newsworthy due to the fact that it is a big topic and it has caused controversy not just here but also in Britain. It involves the lives of teenagres and some people can relate to that type of life that is portrayed in the show.

    By the way, Skins is my favorite show after My Life As Liz, and the stuff that happens on Skins is wayyyy more interesting than Jersey Shore. AND ON TOP OF THATT! my dad would rather me watch Skins than a bunch of fake "guittos" fist pump and get drunk

    This is newsworthy because it's about a show thats very inapporpriate. I haven't watched it yet but i've heard bad things about it. This show will influence many things like drugs and drinking. Even though some people may like it , how would you feel if you were a parent and saw your kid watching this?

    I agree with aislinn that every teenager is exposed to this but does not mean that they do this. It is a stereo type because yes kids do drugs and alchol but there is also a big population of kids who dont drink or smoke.

    THIS SHOW IS AMAZING. People have th choice on whether or not to watch this show, if parents dont like the fact that a Tv show is showing the truth about most kids lives, then they shouldn't watch it. The show should not be canceled, because there are worse things in the media today.

    I have not seen this show yet, but I have heard that it is an extremely controversial show and that it has no value what-so-ever. I don't even understand why MTV would even try to put on a show like this. This show was already receiving criticism before the first episode even premiered.

    I haven't watched the show but just by the article I can tell there is something wrong with it. People are saying that it is exploiting children and they are sayig it is borderline child pornography. This article is newsworthy because it is directed towards parents and is almost telling them to stop their children from watching it. I also agree with Chris

    skins may be a good show but you watching just basically defaces us as children...and how can u say its not fake when im pretty sure majority of the stuff in that show doesnt happen in every highschool..as for examples most kids moms do not just walk out and leave and the kid lives on his own...

    I think that it is a smart idea for advertisers to pull out of this show. This can give companies an extremely bad name by being shown on this show and it could even lead to loss of customers. Some of the companies even went so far to say that their advertisements were accidentally aired on the show.

    I have never watched "Skins" before but, by hearing it on the news I know that it has been getting very bad reviews. Just by seeing the previews, I know that it doesn't show the true life of a teenager. So, therfore I consider this Publicity.

    I think that the tv show skins over does the idea of drugs and other high school occurences. The show makes it look like everybody does all of this stuff when in reality there is a large group that does not partake in such.

    I think this show is disgusting. My opinion. I'm going to go with my gut and say that the 8 advertisers that dropped the show agree. Marissa is correct this show is such an over exaggeration. This is how we are thought of and portrayed! This is how people think of our generation! A bunch of high punks driven by sex. Go watch the news since half the people watching this and relate to it so deeply are ignorant.

    @Desiree: I wouldnt say most teenagers partake in the disgusting nature that the "Skins" actors and actresses partake in. Less than half of America's HS students have had sex. Less than half of America's teens have smoked cigarettes. 6% have used Marijuana and 1% used a hallucinogen.

    Lastly this is newsworthy because of all the human interest that it is sparking.

    This is newsworthy because this show is completely inappropriate. This show is being regarded as "Child pornography", which is a crime. This show should be cancelled, because it would prevent MTV from losing around two million dollars due to lack of advertising. I saw a preview for this show a few weeks before it came out, and it looked inappropriate and seemed like it should not be aired. Therefore, MTV should cancel its airing of Skins.

    I think this is newsworthy because this show is very controversial and it can be seen as a corruption of America's youth. It has lost a lot of its viewers and now the show is in danger of being cancelled. Therer are a lot of people criticizing the show and not as many people trying to fight for its survival. Skins should just be cancelled by MTV because it is just giving them a bad name.

    I agree with Alec. Although some, or maybe even most teenagers do these things, it could peer pressure other teens into doing these things. These behaviors are potentially dangerous, and younger children have the opportunity to accidentally watch the show, due to channel surfing and their older siblings watching it.

    Veiga is right. Anyone can watch this so many people would feel that it could be a bad influence on some children. So that is probably why a lot of people are not supportive of the show.

    This show should definetely be cancelled. All it does is describe every single thing that parents dread. It could influence teenagers and possibly younger audiences that may watch the show. That is why Skins should be cancelled
