Discuss a major sporting event of this academic year and why you think it is so.
The Superbowl is one of the biggest watched events of the year. The recent Superbowl had over 111,000,000 viewers. The Superbowl is such a massive occasion because it pits the teams of different regions against each other. For example, if two teams were pit against each other, it is not very interesting to viewers. However, if we pit New York against Florida, a competitive pride arises. This leads to fierce competition between fans and teams to try and prove that their region is the best. The Superbowl is a big event because although it is just two teams against each other on the surface, it is much deeper than that due to the pride of its viewers.
The Super Bowl is a major sporting event and may be the most important sporting event in the US. Football is Americas sport and a record number, over 100 million viewers, tuned in to watch. It was a very good game between Green Bay and Pittsburgh, and decided the best team in the NFL. Green Bay won and these are some reasons why this event is important.
I agree with Devin though. Outside the academic year the FIFA world cup is definitly the biggest sporting event in the world. Even people who do not like soccer watch and enjoy the excitement tournament that takes place less often than the olympics.
This year the girls varisty soccer team made it to the championship of divison 2. This is a major sporting event because they haven't made it to the championship very often. Also for the seniors it is a big year because its their senior year and it's just a big thing to make it to the championship.
Although the super bowl was the most watched in terms of in the united states, but I agree with devin that the soccerr world cup was the biggest international event. Several countries compteted and it involved the entire world rather than just the two teams with in the united states
Soccer is a very popular sport. It is the most popular sport in the world actually. More people will watch something that gives them directly what they want than going through the middle man (the olympics). The olympics add more sports than what is wanted by soccer fans.
Jonathon, I am not sure that people who do not like soccer enjoy watching FIFA World Cup. Maybe they check the results at the end just to be up-to-date, but most people who tune in only tune in because they like soccer or watching their team play soccer.
A way to prove that the world cup is the most popular event is that everyone remembers Zinidane Zidane. Most would not remember him by name, but if you say 'the guy who did the headbutt to that Italian guy' then they would all know who you are talking about. If you were to say 'Did you see that catch that Greg Jennings made in the super bowl?' not many would remember what you are talking about.
During the FIFA world cup final, tens of thousands of people gathered just to watch the game on a big screen in a public area in their country. That number is just a fraction of the actual viewers watching throughout the world on tv and even at the game.
The NHL all-star game was a big sporting event that captured fan's attention with a new twist. Fans could vote the players on the team, but this year they had captains pick the teams instead of the eastern conference vs the western conference.
Another reason why the World Cup is watched more than football because football is American and soccer (or futbol) is primarily European, so it is very easy to gain more viewers for the World Cup when you are attracting viewers from all of Europe. Therefore, the biggest sporting event of the year in America is the Superbowl.
I also agree with Ryan Connor, the superbowl is a major sporting event. Football is a hugely popular sport in America and many viewers tuned in to watch it last sunday. The superbowl is always a big event, so big that many people have parties just to watch the superbowl. If it wasn't a major event, 111,000,000 people wouldn't have watched it.
Ryan I think a lot of people watch it just because our nations team is playing in it. I am not talking about just here though. In most countries soccer is the favortie sport, so the majority of the people watch it. Also more than 10 times more people watch the FIFA cup than those that watch the super bowl. Also many people that I know that could care less about soccer watched because of the excitement that this tournament brings. Its the world's favorite sporting event, period.
A major sporting event that happened this academic year is the Superbowl. It was watched by many people and I think it's because football is really popular in the U.S. However, football is not watched very often in the rest of the world.
I think that rugby is a better sport than american football because rugby players go hard. They wear little to no padding, when football players gear up.
I think the superbowl is the biggest sporting event of the year because most americans love football, and everyone looks foward to it, especially if there are teams they like that made it to the superbowl. Everyone gets together and throws huge superbowl parties and all that jazz.
Actually the world series of poker is an extremely popular sporting event. Up to 8000 people participate in just one tournament and the winner can get up to 12 million dollars. So to anyone that puts down the world series of poker should think again.
Zach all Europeans know what football is and most of them may not know what soccer is. However, this is because they use the term football (futbol) for soccer, and rugby for their version of American type football., and Europeans play rugby.
I agree with alec that the x games is a big sporting event, but only for a select crowd of people who enjoy skiing and snowboarding, unlike the superbowl that most watch whether it is for the foot ball, the halftime show or even the commercials.
The new set up of the all-star game also stirred up a little bit of controversy within the draft of the all-stars. There was a few jokes that were made during the draft and the last person picked even got a new hybrid car.
I also agree wtih Sully, the NHL allstar game is also a big sporting event. Not many games give people a chance to vote for the players and captains. Many Americans are hockey fans and hockey is a popular sport in America.
I agree with Devin. The world cup is much more popular than the Olympics. Although the U.S always has like 200 participans, most countries have less than 100 and the only countries similar to the U.S are Canada and Russia. Everybody follows the World Cup even if their country didn't qualify
@alec I love the xgames but it only appeals to the participants of the sports shown. For instance ill bet NONE of the people on this blog know what SNOWSKAting is and yet its one of the biggest sports in the xgames.
I completely disagree with Chris. The world series poker game doesnt even compete with the superbowl, honestly who watches that? I doubt you even did..Half the people in America probably dont even know what that is...
The Royal Rumble on WWE because this year it was 40 and it's normally 30. I don't watch sports so i'm clueless when it comes to sport sports like Football. Tennis, hocket etc...
I agree with devin. To make a sports event major, something has to be remembered or known about it to a lot of fans. The difference between major & minor is that to a little 5 year old, a soccer game could mean the world to them & they will remember it their whole life. But to others a major sports game is an NBA game or the World Cup or the super bowl
I agree with Devin also. Soccer is one of the most watched sports in the entire world and the world cup is the biggest event for the whole soccer community.
I also agree with sully, even though he picked that just cause he likes hockey LOL. But hockey is another sport that americans love, and it's a sport that keeps your interest, unlike golf or something. I think that the NHL allstar game is a big sporting event that people look foward too. Not many games give people a chance to vote for the players and captains
Does anyone even care about swimming? I actually had the pleasure of going to a Lincoln High School swim meet and I must say I found it quite enjoyable.
Some people think hockey is the most popular sport in America. Maybe it is in Canada and in the Northern US, but in The southern states hockey's popularity just falls off. Many people do not like hockey. I think its a good sport, but it probably isn't even in the top 3 sports in America.
I think a major sporting event in this academic year was the Super Bowl. I tryed to go my own way and think of something else to bring up but this game is huge in this country. The whole world is watching it the Packers who are very well known won the lombardi trophy.
Just because i'm a tennis player, i'm gonna go and say that the U.S open is a pretty big event. I'd say serena and venis williams bring a lot of attention because of their ability and talent for the sport, and they both usually make it to the u.s open.
I agree with Marissa. Not only is the superbowl a huge deal but because it brings america together when people have parties, tailgate, listen to the game together, watch it on tv, & more
Marissa, there are other games that allow people to vote for the players they want to play. The NHL All-star game or any of the other all-star games are not good games because usually its just a scoring fest. Players do not want to get injurred so they do not go as hard. These games are not what all the hype makes them out to be.
I enjoy swimming. I do not see why they have to shave all of the hair on their bodies. I understand it is to make you go faster, but it is quite unusual. I feel as though it is unmanly
Everyone has to agree the superbowl is huge, even if you're not a football fan, you'll know about it and hear about it just from all the conversation and controversy it brings up through other people, it's a well known event
POKER isn't even a SPORT just because it's on ESPN doesn't make it a sport Do u see what the people of poker do? They get people to get them drinks and they sit on there but and flip card and throws chips in if that's considered a sport why isn't couch potatoing a sport.
Marissa makes a point with the U.S. Open because tennis is an internationally recognized sport and a lot of people play it and watch it from all over thee world.
Starting next week is the Cricket World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. Although it isn't popular here, it is extremely popular in the rest of the world. Some of the favorites this year are England and Australia and there will definetely dedicated fans in the U.S staying up all night to watch the Cricket World Cup
Jonathon it is easy to get ten times the viewers for the World Cup when you can get viewers from any country participating. The Superbowl is a big sporting event because so many Americans watched it, and the World Cup, however big, should not be compared to it because even though ten times as many people watched it, more than ten times the amount of people in those countries did not watch it. For example, lets say about 40% of Americans watched the Super Bowl (hypethetically), if ten other countries had just 10% of their viewers watch the World Cup, they would probably beat the record, but many more people would not have watched the World Cup, and so the two events cannot be compared.
Another case that you could make for a big event was the world cup and I believe that was the biggest event this year. Even I watched the World Cup and I play basketball. It can take place anywhere in the world and everybody in the universe can tell wyou what soccer is. It is just a global sport and it is the biggest event so far.
@Tyge actually your wrong. my brother and i wath the xgames religiously and if you havent noticed there are thousands of fans at the xgames EVERYTIME. Just sayin'
I agree with Jonathon on hockey. Hockey is not very important in America compared to other sports. In Canada, it is largely popular, but it is definitely not in America.
A big sporting event that happened just recently was the Beanpot tournament which is a college hockey tournament consisting of four teams from Mass. I think this is a major sporting event because its great competition and there is a lot of pride in winning since it is a four team rivalry. All of these teams are Mass based and the games are played in the Boston Bruins arena.
I agree with Devin about the World Cup. Many people followed it and it molds younger kids into playing soccer. I started soccer this year and watching the world cup was a promo for me.
The 2010 World Cup was important. Although it was in the summer, I think it can be an acception seeing as how it only happens once every four years.
ReplyDeleteThere are more people that watch the world cup than there are that watch the olympics

ReplyDeleteDevin, why do you think more people watch the World Cup than the Olympics?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ryan Connor, the superbowl's always a major sporting event
ReplyDeleteThis might not qualify but did anyone hear about the dunk that took the rim off the backboard in a college game
ReplyDeleteI agree with Devin though. Outside the academic year the FIFA world cup is definitly the biggest sporting event in the world. Even people who do not like soccer watch and enjoy the excitement tournament that takes place less often than the olympics.

ReplyDeleteya i agree with jonathan . my family has a party almost every year to cheer on our team.
ReplyDeletethe superbowl was the biggest event because football has one of the biggest followings for sports in the u.s.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the super bowl was the most watched in terms of in the united states, but I agree with devin that the soccerr world cup was the biggest international event. Several countries compteted and it involved the entire world rather than just the two teams with in the united states

ReplyDeleteI agree with Ryan Conner, the Superbowl is and always will be a major event.

ReplyDelete@everyone soccer is a HUGE sport as devin said and most if not all countries know what soccer is. Not all countries know what football is
ReplyDeletei disagree with D.lambert. the olympics give you sports that even if you dont like one. you would still want to go and watch it for another one
ReplyDeletewith Jaclyn*
ReplyDeleteAn umpire in the MLB blew a call that took away a pitchers perfect game.
ReplyDeleteAnother reason why the World Cup is watched more than football because football is American and soccer (or futbol) is primarily European, so it is very easy to gain more viewers for the World Cup when you are attracting viewers from all of Europe. ReplyDeleteDevin's right. It is actually more popular because it's more memorable.

ReplyDeleteon espn the poker world series is actually taken very seriously and is broadcast throughout the whole day into the night.
ReplyDeleteThe Winter X games is a big sporting event for people who like to ski and snowboard.
ReplyDeleteRyan I think a lot of people watch it just because our nations team is playing in it. I am not talking about just here though. ReplyDeleteI agree with chris that these poker stars take it very seriously and that is their life playing poker.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Madie, that even if some people don't like one of the sports in the olympics, they would still go for another one.
ReplyDeletemichaela there are plenty of other sports that are important...but i agree with ryan connor
ReplyDeleteI think that rugby is a better sport than american football because rugby players go hard. They wear little to no padding, when football players gear up.
ReplyDeletei agree with micheal that was preeety cool.
ReplyDeleteI think the superbowl is the biggest sporting event of the year because most americans love football, and everyone looks foward to it, especially if there are teams they like that made it to the superbowl. Everyone gets together and throws huge superbowl parties and all that jazz.

ReplyDeleteI also agree wtih Sully, the NHL allstar game is also a big sporting event. Not many games give people a chance to vote for the players and captains. Many Americans are hockey fans and hockey is a popular sport in America.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jon, even though football is the most popular sport in America, soccer is the most popular in the world.
ReplyDeleteI think that basically any NBA game is a major sporting event. Girls & boys alike watch it & get very into it!
ReplyDeletei agree with michaela and ryan connor
ReplyDeletei agree with chris actually because alot of people like to watch poker, and personally i like to watch that more then any other sport.
ReplyDeleteI am with Chris. Those poker players go hard. It gets really intense.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Devin. The world cup is much more popular than the Olympics. ReplyDeleteya alex my dad loves poker and watches it on t.v sometimes. but i dont think its a sport
ReplyDeleteIs poker considered a sport?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Devin also. Soccer is one of the most watched sports in the entire world and the world cup is the biggest event for the whole soccer community.

ReplyDeletechris is immature.
@VEIGA i completely agree with you i used to be on the woonsocket YMCA team. It's fun and it does take a bit of work
ReplyDeleteAlec, nobody watches the X Games because it is not a popular event to watch. But I like the creativity.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Marissa. Not only is the superbowl a huge deal but because it brings america together when people have parties, tailgate, listen to the game together, watch it on tv, & more

ReplyDeleteI agree with Jonathon on hockey. Hockey is not very important in America compared to other sports. In Canada, it is largely popular, but it is definitely not in America.
ReplyDeleteyea Tyge i think the universe might be a bit of a stretch
ReplyDeleteHOW is chess a sport?! Maybe a mental sport but not a physical sport.
ReplyDeleteChess is a sport. If chess wasn't a sport, Poker wouldn't be either
