Which photos do you think are the most powerful? What makes them so? What do these pictures present that others do not?
Due to the nature of this topic, you should have a minimum of 4 posts.
The photos i believe are the most powerful are the ones that show the most detail...as an example the one with the bull...although it is grusome it also shows alot of great detail.
ReplyDeleteI think that these photos were very powerful becuase they dealt with a lot of problems in the world. Other pitures usually try to put a happy spin on things, where everyone smiles for the camera even though they may have a lot of problems in their lives.
ReplyDeleteI think the most powerful ones are the ones that are gruesome because they draw a lot of emotion from you and it is very detailed. Plus most of these pictures are of very controversal events and so that is a way to draw even more emotion.
ReplyDeleteeach picture in a way tells a story, like the one with the woman standing in front of the debree, you know that a natural disaster or something very bad happened.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that makes these pictures stand out from the other pictures that are taken is that, they are very detailed and they make you want to see more about the context of the photo.
ReplyDeletei agree with michael, the most grusome ones are the ones that show the most emotion and feeling.
ReplyDeleteThe ones that are most prominent and important are the ones that have a meaning, or are of significance. The ones that have to do with something thats going on in the world, and take an importance in an everyday life, rather than the ones that mean nothing like the pictures of a boxing match or random things. The pictures that strike me as prominent are the ones that show disaster around the world, people that are hungry or a breakout or a riot, or a natural disaster like a land slide or hurricane or something like that.
ReplyDeleteI agree with michael and chris, the ones that are gruesome invoke the most emotion. I think the one with the bull (the guy lived by the way) was especially gruesome.
ReplyDeleteAll of the pictures were incredibly powerful and moving. They all dealt with controversial topics and important problems in our society. Each one of them was eye opening and forced you to look twice. The photographers who took these images must have been very talented because they captured the image so well. Its true that the pictures that have the most detail are the strongest. The picture of the dead animals hanging on a close line stood out the most to me. I thought it was disgusting and hard to look at, yet i couldnt look away. I feel awful for the bunnies and the birds hanging dead on that line. A huge amount of animal cruelty is involved in that picture.
ReplyDeletei agree with marrissa the pictures that you have some background knowledge are the ones that have the most prominent to us because we understand them.
ReplyDeleteI think that the most powerful picture is the one of the family sitting on what appears to be a hospital floor and the father is holding the son and the mother and they are all crying. I think this is a really powerful picture because these horrible things are happening all around us and this photo shows a snipit of the effects that they have on us.
ReplyDeleteThese pictures represent the world in every way, from struggles we face everyday, to happy moments in our lives. When i look at the photos, it makes me wonder "how do these people feel? & how do they still stay strong?". The pictures of the sadness and hurt n peoples eyes were he most powerful because it makes you think that what most people have today, tak the smallest things for granted. we have food, and water, and are able to take showers or baths when we feel like it, people somewhere else in this world could not have any of those. the smallest things could mean so much more to someone else. These pictures represent that.
ReplyDeleteMichaela, I think it is supposed to show that in some parts of the world they need to hunt the smallest animals just to get food on the table. I think it's suppossed to show how in some parts of the world they need to do things that we never would just to get through another day.
ReplyDeleteMeredith Walsh:
ReplyDeleteThe pictures that are the most powerful are the one's that you know something bad is happening. There are manys that show african americans screaming and looking very scared. Also there is one that a boy is getting hit by a car. They tell a story, and that's powerful.
I agree with ryan, because a lot of these pictures are powerful for the reason being that they show the whole truth, instead of sugar coating it, or creating the illusion that things are okay, when in reality they are not. It shows how bad the after math is once a disaster strikes, instead of acting like it's okay.
ReplyDeleteI think all of these pictures were very meaningful and powerful. All of the pictures have a hidden meaning in them. All of the pictures were very detailed too.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with many others on here that they most disturbing and grusome bring out alot of emotion and this makes them the most powerful because they make you feel certain emotions.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Marissa, the strongest pictures are the ones that involve huge problems in our society. These pictures are of things like earthquakes and other natural disasters. They are the most serious because they deal with actual problems in the world, and show how difficult life is for the people in other parts of the world. Many of these pictures are extremely confusing with many hidden messages.
ReplyDeleteI agree with chris and marissa because it is hard to fully understand something if you do not have any experience in that area.
ReplyDeleteAll of these pictures sum up all of the horrors of our society, as well as some of the good things. I thoght these pictures were used in a slideshow such as this to show people like us what we are missing in our society both good and bad.
ReplyDeleteMeredith Walsh:
ReplyDeleteI agree wtih Desiree. The pictures really do show struggles that people face everyday. Also there are pictures that are enjoyable and show the happy moments in life.
These picture were all powerful and they all show big events and catostrophes. The one on poyi.com were the most grueling because they had more pics and had more grusome pics. The one of the rhino dead was really moving becasue on the pic before they dhowed it running through the forest and then you see it dead. They were not all bad becasue some were of people winning or just being creepy.
ReplyDeleteMeredith, I think most of the ones featuring "African Americans" were in Africa.
ReplyDeleteI think that the photos that are most powerful are the ones that show the gruesome outcome of war, violence, and destruction. They are powerful because most of the pictures are eye-catching. These pictures represent the problems that are happening around the world.
ReplyDeleteI think these pictures are very powerful because they show the problems going on in the world and how bad a situation some people are really in. For example there were pictures of people swarming buses trying to get out of there country and victims of natural disasters. These people are desperate and some were severely injurred, but the pictures show us the reality of what is going on, no matter how gruesome.
ReplyDeleteI agree with chris that the bull was really grusome.
ReplyDeleteAnd its not just the grusome pictures that bring out emotion, the ones of the athletes bring out emotion. In the pictures it shows you teams winning and rejoiceing and they make you feel happy and kind of share the win with them.
ReplyDeleteThe two scariest and disgusting pictures had to be the one with the bulls horn going through the bull fighters face, and the girl whos face was deformed by either a birth deffect or an accident. All of the pictures were very powerful and clear but these two stood out the most to me.
ReplyDeleteI agree with meredith, the pictures tell a story, but with out any words, which is truly showing or telling the viewer something.
ReplyDeleteThese pictures are remarkable and breathtaking. Although some may be sad, I applaud the photographers for doing such wonderful work on depicting people or problems with this world. The most gruesome like Chris said are the ones that show the most emotion because it makes you understand more thoroughly what the people in the ppictures are going through. The most gruesome overall was the picture of the bull's horn going through that man's chin.
ReplyDeleteRyan i think you're right. The picture is probably meant to show how hard it is to find food in other parts of the world, and that only makes the picture more sad and eye opening.
ReplyDeleteI think that the photos were done well and that there was a variety of pictures of things like disaster, death, happiness and winning.
ReplyDeleteI agreee with tyge that the photographers took remarkable and amazing photos of this events.
ReplyDeleteThe pictures about war and showing how bad the world is today are also very powerful. There is a picture of an explosion happening. It shows how bad the wars and different countries are.
ReplyDeleteTo add on to what Marissa said, I completely agree with that because I believe that words can sometimes take away from the meaning of the picture. For a person to just look at something anad analyze what is going on. it creates a deeper picture in thier mind then just skiiming through an article or story.
ReplyDeleteEveryone was amazing in there own way. But some most deffinatly stand out espeically the one with the pelgin carcass. (I don't know if it is alive or anything) But just by how it looks it looks dead. I know other picture had strong deathly images but personally that one stands out more to me.
ReplyDeleteI think the most powerful picture is the one of the family siting on a floor and crying. It was very sad and it shows you that these horrible things are happening to everyone
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ryan. There are many people around the world that struggle to survive everyday. Animals that we would never even think of harming here in the U.S, are the food source for people living in other countries. It should make us appreciate what we have.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jaclyn because, it shows the effects that soliders are having everyday when they are gone for so many weeks or months. It shows the feelings that he is going through when he sees his child for the first time in months and same for his wife and that is why this is such powerful picture.
ReplyDeleteI thought some of the most powerful pictures were also the images of natural disasters. The images of the earthquakes in New Zealand and Bolivia portrayed communities that were completely destroyed. When we read about something like this we usually do not realize how bad the damage is. The images of the damage and people left homeless tells the real story.
ReplyDeleteI believe the most powerful photo in these slide shows was the picture of a boy that was no older than 18 being held at gunpoint. He appeared to be being interogated by something. The look of fear on his face alone said it all.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Desiree, these pictures definetly represents our world, and in this case the problems that the world has. They also show how in America we take things for granted and make a big deal out of probelms that arent as bad as the problems people deal with in other parts of the world.
ReplyDeleteM-Walsh is making some suprisingly good points today. I think that the world is getting worse with violence and although the death rate in our country is slightly going down, we are not the only country in the world and people are getting really hurt.
ReplyDeleteI think tey should put a little backstory under each pic because some of them make you want to know more
ReplyDeleteAn example of my last post is the interest surrounding the bull fighter picture. Almost everyone wanted to learn more about the situation and whether or not he lived or not. This goes to show how these pictures spark curiousity.
ReplyDeleteCaley Remillard
ReplyDeleteTo me, all of the pictures were powerful. Some much more than others. Although the pictures with bad things happening in them, seem to grap my attention more.
I agree with Xinrui. It really makes us appreciate what we have and the little things in life. Other people might be struggling just to get food.
ReplyDeleteDid the guy with the bullhorn through his chin die? Does anyone have a follow up article about this poor man?
ReplyDeletegrab*...
ReplyDeleteI have yet to see that picture with the boy at gunpoint but I can already tell by what people said that it is poweful. All the pictures are powerful and I didn't have any knowledge of the stuff that goes on in this world until these pictures caught my attention to it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with jessica agreeing with me. and the pictures of the three little white haired kids is kind of random and out of place in this slide of photos.
ReplyDeleteZach, they do give a sidestory. Click 68th winners gallery.
ReplyDeleteThese pictures really get oyu thinking about how these people, everyday people like us, deal wih all of the things in thir life. These pictures make you feel like your in the situation, these pictures show how they feel about all of this, for example, the girl in th high heels thats falling makes you feel like she must be in a lot of pain, the African people are crying out, so they must be hurting in the inside and on the outside. these pictures show pain, but they also show happiness in some of them.
ReplyDeletein the msnbc jan 27-feb3 there is a picture of a car that is standing vertically in the snow after a car crash. This picture just shows people who did not get battered by snow storms, the turmoil that people in new england and other snow battered areas endured.
ReplyDeleteSome of the pictures are pretty grusome or intense, but that's the reality of it all. In reality, things like this actually happen, our society is just too wrapped up in other insignificant things and technology to notice or care. Instead of creating lies based solely on what we want to believe, these pictures show exactly what is going on, exactly what is wrong or what happened, and exactly what needs to be fixed or changed. These pictures are not sweet and happy to try and hide all this society from the bad situations in the world, they tell it exactly how it is, without any words. They are legit, and not fake
ReplyDeleteSome of the pictures were extremely gruesome and hard to look at, but they were really informational. Many people are not aware of most of the things going on in the world.
ReplyDeleteAndrew he lived. He was brought to a hospital and they got him out of critical condition.
ReplyDeletei agree with who ever said that the natural disaster ones are very powerful. These disasters happen everyday and we only hear about a handful of them each year
ReplyDeletei think that they are mostly affected by us and makes us upset, about them is bec uase the people who havent experiance anything like that can feel like why does it have to be like that. living here. we have it good (or better than somewhere else). while people somewhere elsse might not. these pictures are powerful becuase it makes us appecheate that we have it good. and might make us want to help the people (iin some of the pictures) so that they can live happly.
ReplyDeleteZach hit the nail on the head with this comment: "I think tey should put a little backstory under each pic because some of them make you want to know more." I completely agree that these pictures make you want to know more. If the viewer wants to know more about a picture then you know that your picture is powerful.
ReplyDeleteI think the photos that are the most powerful are the ones that are relivant to society. This includes the firefighter carrying someone out of a burning building, an explosion from far away, etc. It makes people reflect on their own lives and see how lucky they are. These pictures represent the irony in the world.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jonathan. The pictures of the natural disasters were shocking. I didn't know how bad things really were in some places.
ReplyDeleteThe photographers did an amazing of taking the pictures in a breathtaking way. The way these pictures are taken, make us look at them twice. Just by looking at these pictures, I am very lucky to be living in America and not a place of violence and war.
ReplyDeleteI agree with tyge. Right now there is definitly more violence going on around the world. One picture that stood out to me was a picture of a young boy being held at gun point in Libya. A young boy should not be put in that situation and right now he may or may not be alive, which is even sadder. It is definitly a very tough time for the people in Libya and that region right now.
ReplyDeletei know that Ryan but I can't find all of the pictures I want to know about
ReplyDeleteI think that one of the most powerful images was the man cutting up a whale while it was still alive and having it spew blood while he tried to kill it. I think that is a very inhumane way off killing an animal for food and that they should kill it a different way
ReplyDeleteRyan, so now he has a hole in his chin? Is he getting any plastic surgery or anything?
ReplyDeleteMy favorite one was the one with the bengal in the grassland it was so cute. It wasn't one of those pictures that wanted to make you gag, cry or feel sorry.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with chris. Just because a picture has a lot of detail doesn't make it more powerful it just makes it easier to understand. Sometimes the most simple things are the most powerful
ReplyDeleteThe picture of the people in Libya desperately trying to jump on the overcorwded bus to escape their country is also very prominent. The fact that these peopel have to go through such a desperate measure in hopes of escaping their country really makes you think and feel fortunate.
ReplyDeleteI think one of the most interesting pictures is the picture showing the young man at gunpoint in Libya, and it makes me wonder how many people out there may be being wrongly accused, whether he is or not. It's a dangerous place.
ReplyDeleteZach, that picture IS very emotional, but I don't think it's the most powerful picture.
ReplyDeleteAndrew I do not know the whole story, just that they saved his life.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jessica. After viewing these pictures it makes me really appreciate where I live. We are kept safe and when we are in times of need, such as during natural disasters, we have programs that can help us through it. Where as these people are struggling just to stay alive.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Rose. Sometimes it's the simplest thing that sets off the biggest things
ReplyDeleteRose makes a good point, a picture can be very simple and mean more than a complex detailed photo. Detail doesn't equal power in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Chris because each of these pictures do tell a story. Each picture has a deeper meaning that you can delve into.
ReplyDeleteThe pictures in africa give you a closer look at the terrible act of poaching that is taking place there. They show a perfectly healthy rhino picture in africa, that follows by a picture of a rhino, possibly the same one, dead. These pictures can change a persons opinion on conflicts such as this one.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, most of the sports pictures did not seem to be powerful to me. They were not anything different then what I would normally see online.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with marissa. Pictures are more powerful and meaningful to someone if they know something about the topic already
ReplyDeleteI agree with Zach and Andrew. I think they should provide a link to a website that will offer us some more information with the pictures.
ReplyDeleteJonathan proves a good point. no one really knows how bad it is until you actually see the damages or people handling it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Tyler, I enjoyed those pictures that make you happy. My favorite was the picture of pandas in a basket.
ReplyDeleteShounak I agree with you on that picture, it's brutal...I can't understand how that is allowed to happen to these animals, how can you feel alright about what you're doing while the animal is suffering. You can at least kill it first.
ReplyDeleteJohn there is also a picture of a rhino charging the photographers vehicle. A guard had to fire a warning shot (then his gun jammed) and the rhino turned away at the last second. It just shows how the animals are getting more aggressive and desperate.
ReplyDeleteCaley, I agree with that. Most of the sports pictures are ordinary and you could basically find them anywhere. That just ties back in with Marissa's comment as well though. Neither of us know a lot about sports so therefore they are kind of irrelivant to us.
ReplyDeleteCaley, I think you're right. The sports related pictures didn't really interest me. They were kind of boring compared to the other striking pictures that were featured.
ReplyDeleteShounak- This is a very powerful picture. It shows how people in other parts of the world have to do just to eat. All of these pictures are a wake up call to all of us.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Shounak. That panda picture was so cute!
ReplyDeleteI agree with caley, most of the sports pictures were not as powerful, although they were fun to look at.
ReplyDeleteI agree with rose disagreeing with chris.
ReplyDeleteThanks VEIGA
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jerzy, a picture does not need to be extremely complex to be powerful. Some simple ones such as a picture of an animal or a face can tell a whole story. That can be more moving than complex photos with a large amount of people or a tragic scene.
ReplyDeleteI like how these pictures caught views of pictures that you usually do not get to see. For example the girl diving in the water, the picture was caught right as she was entering the water. This picture looks far more interesting in picture form than it would look in real time. The same goes for the basketball player luke walton with his feet in the air. The angle of the picture was very intersting and insane how he did not get hurt during the play.
ReplyDelete@Ryan: I saw some picture of a large animal that was tied up and looked unconsious but not dead. Was that the same rhino in the earlier picture? If it wasn't, what animal was that?
ReplyDeleteThe general consensus on the blog is that we should be grateful for what we have and I agree with that, these pictures open up our eyes to what is happening elsewhere in the world. We are so lucky and should appreciate these photos.
ReplyDeleteCommenting on how some people are saying that simpler pictures are better and others are saying that more complex ones are better, I think that they are better in different situations and it all depends on what the photographer is trying to accomplish or say in their picture.
ReplyDeleteI think all the photos with the pictures of deceased people are extremely. It is something that nobody wants to see but yet everyone looks at them.
ReplyDeletewell just because the sports articles seemed comman doesnt mean taht they arnt powerful. they showed how pround they were that they won.
ReplyDeleteI disagree John, I didn't find those pictures very interesting at all.
ReplyDeletewhoops, chris you're not HAM get over it
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ryan Connor.
ReplyDeletethe bull one didnt seem that powerful to me. gross yes. but not as powerful as the others
ReplyDeletei wonder why theose people who had a gun to that kid. let the camera man take a picture 0f that. wouldnt they not want them to. some of those camera people are preety brave.
ReplyDeleteI found the picture of the bull very disgusting. Also, what really annoyed me was that the man was doing that by choice. He knew how risky it was. I don't get why anyone would choose to do that.
ReplyDeletethats exzackly what i thought shounak!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Veiga. Pictures of negative stuff like death always attract attention although people don't want to see them. This shows why negative stories are always newsworthy
ReplyDelete
