Read the following article. Why is this newsworthy? What does this picture highlight? What other pictures may capture the essence of the article? http://www.projo.com/news/content/woodmansee_journal_03-15-11_K4N0PK7_v13.1940cc1.html

  1. I think that a picture of someone being eaten would capture the essence of this story, nevermind the article.

  2. I think it offensive to ask why this article is newsworthy. Clearly it is wrong to rape, kill, and eat a child. GOSH!

    ReplyDelete
  3. This is newsworthy because it has a lot of proximity to Rhode Islanders. It is also newsworthy because it is rare to hear of a molesting cannibal. This will bother a lot of people and probably make them concerned about their safety. This picture highlights how people oppose his release, which is because they are worried about their children. Another picture that would fit this article is possibly of some bones, but that may be too gruesome for some people to see.

  4. This is newsworthy because it is about a man who committed a very severe homicicide being let out of jail early. This endangers children from getting raped and murdered and the way it affects everybody makes it newsworthy

  5. I agree with Devin on why it is newsworthy.

  6. I agree with devin nevermind the article, a picture of someone being eaten is graphic enough.

  7. I think this story would not have gotten as much publicity if Woody did not eat the child. Society is more accepting of murderers and rapists, but cannibalism is too far!

  8. I do not think they should let him out early for good behavior. He probably only behaved well because there were no children in the prison.

  9. Meredith Walsh:
This article is newsworthy because its human interest. People want to know what their kids are in danger of. A boy got raped, killed and eaten.

  10. This story is very newsworthy! It is right in Rhode Island and just to think that this man ate a boy in Rhode Island is shocking. The picture is good and sends a message, but the message isnt a powerful one. I really don't know what could go as a picture for this article. Tey do talk alot about that journal so maybe a picture of the sealed journal along with the current picture and maybe a picture of him.

  11. This article is newsworthy due to its proximity and prominence. It is prominent because the story took place in North Kingstown which is very close to Lincoln. It is prominent because of how unusual and shocking the story is. Molesting and murdering a small child is shocking enough but eating its flesh and keep it's bones on a mantle is just bizarre. This article could definetely attract the attention of the entire nation

  12. I agree with Devin a person raping, killing and EATING a child is newsworthy enough. He is getting out of jail and the people are horrified by this. The picture captures the moment showing a mother and daughter protesting what is going on because they feel threatened by him being let out.

  13. This is newsworthy because this man is clearly not mentally healthy if he killed and cannibalized a little boy. This whole situation is attention-grabbing because the fact that he is now being released from jail is terrifying for many people. I know I personally would not feel safe if I knew there was a freed man in Rhode Island who ate a child...

  14. i believe this is newsworthy because its very odd that someone would eat another person, and because the story is so close to where we live. This article is also newsworthy because it brings up a very controversal topic.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think a more effective picture would have been if the little girl was holding a sign saying "Don't eat me!"

    ReplyDelete
  16. i also agree with Xinrui to why its newsworthy.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Shounak it probably will not attract the attention of the entire nation. It may attract the residents of New England, but it would not matter to somebody a few thousand miles away.

The picture highlights the reaction of people, and how they feel about Woodmansee's released.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I agree with Ryan Connor. If a criminal/psycho like him was behaving in prison its not because all of a sudden he had a change of heart. It's because he wants to get out.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think this is newsworthy because it is a very controversal issue about a child murderer. This man has the chance of getting out early and to many, that's completely wrong. He killed, molested and then showed off the bones of a five-year boy. Plus, he got caught trying to strangle another child 7 years later. And now we want to release him into society.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I agree wtih Xinrui, I would not feel safe either.

    ReplyDelete
  22. This is newsworthy because people would want to know who is being released back into our society after committing a serious crime like this. With these kinds of serious cases, i think the whole "good behavior" thing is dumb because obviously someone who is in jail is going to know that if they are good, they will be let out early, so therefor they can fake being or acting in a good manner, and this does not prove how they will act once they are let out. This picture highlights that the society wants to keep the community safe from these kind of people, and prevent him or anyone else from doing it again. The other pictures that they could put up were pictures of the bones in the man's room, even though it is a little intense. Considering he's only about 50 years old now, he still has a good amount of his life left to be committing crimes or any thing of that sort. Then again he could put the rest of his life to good use, but something tells me that is highly unlikely to happen

  23. Meredith Walsh:
I agree with Devin about the picture. It would definitley capture the essence of the article.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think this articles newsworthy because this happened in Rhode Island and the early release of a child murder/molester/eater is just insane. I think he should be put on death row for eating someone.

    ReplyDelete
  25. A canibal is being released from jail!! and he's in our state!! that's why it's newsworthy. He's getting out cause of good behavior. Who ever designed that good behavior thing is stupid. He is a heartless and creepy man. I don't think anyone in there right mind would ever want a man like Woodmansee out of jail.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The picture captures all of the controvesy that surrounds this story. With all of theses protestors and the fact that one of them was a child really shows that people do not want this man to be set free.

    ReplyDelete
  27. To make this article more terrible to read, or think about would be pieces of the gruesome journal. I dont mean to sound weird or anything, but i would like to see the journal. I think more people would be scared if they read the article, because even though its a messed up story, the journal would in sense, make it more alive and believable.

    ReplyDelete
  28. This picture shows how we don't want him back into society. He did some sick things to a little boy and now he is being released. Most of the population thinks that he would be a menace to society and that most would be in fear of him.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I completely agree with Devin. This article is very prominent and newsworthy. If this occured in North Kingston or South Kingston, wherever, then it has importance to people throughout the state. With that being said though, this guy is prolly an old man who is not as big of a threat as he was 40 years ago and will most likely be put under surveillance anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree completely with Tyler.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I agree with Ryan. This story is proximate to us in Rhode Island. The people in Rhode Island do not want this man released, as he still poses a threat to many people. He may have had good behavoir in prison, but most inmates do this and then end up committing another crime as a repeat offender. This makes it easy to understand why people would not want him to be released.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I agree with Aislinn in that we should put him on death row.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Its ridiculous that anyone who commits an atrocity like this can even have the option to get an early release. This picture shows not only adults care about this, but it shows a child holding up a sign about how Woodmansee should stay in jail.

    ReplyDelete
  34. This article is newsworthy because it has proximity and is very prominent. It is in the state of Rhode Island which is local and it deals with someone being released after he killed and ate a 5 year old. This man should not be released from jail because it would make other people unsafe.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Considering it's in like south kingston, i could go to the beach this summer and he could be there...and the beach has plenty of new victims for him to chose from. clearly i am against him being let out. i agree with xinrui, he is definitely not mentally capable of being let out back into the public and living a normal life...i would not feel safe at all

    ReplyDelete
  36. This is newsworthy because first of all it is close to home and second of all this guy is messed up and this does not happen very often. Obvisouly this guy is not right upstairs and should not be able to get out. All the things he did were very very wrong but the most disturbing was putting his bones on the mantle.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I agree with jonathon. A lot of people get out of jail and then repeat a similar crime.

    ReplyDelete
  38. A powerful picture in my opinion would be a whole lot of kids holding signs to keep him in jail. This would show how people truly want him in jail, for the sake of peace of mind.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I agree with Ryan Connor this article is newsworthy because it has proximity to Rhode Islanders considering this takes place in South Kingston! Only about an hour or so away from where we live. Its also newsworthy because its shocking, who in their right mind would molest a child and then eat them? Not only did he eat him but he preserved his bones like they were his trophy. This story is unlike any other i have heard before and its certainly newsworthy.

  41. This picture highlights the protests against Woodmansee's release. Another picture that would capture the essence of the article would be a picture of the man. He looks pretty creepy.

    ReplyDelete
  42. What good behavior in prison did he show to the warden? He ate a child and molested the child. This act should go punished forever. I know in Rhode Island we have no death sentence and that is another topic entirely but if somebody eats a child and molests the child, than they should be brought to death.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Alec what are you talking about. This is not Central Park it's Rhode Island. Get with it.

    ReplyDelete
  44. This pictures highlights all of the protestors, of all ages. It shows just how badly the people want this man to stay in jail.

  46. I disagree with Desiree, I don't think the journal should be released. I don't think the boys family would like that very much..

    ReplyDelete
  47. This article disgusts me. To think that someone to do this to a child. What makes me even more sick is that he was not killed or put in jail for life, but instead released early. I don't care how old he is, a person like that is sick and should be in a mental hospital. A picture that would express this better is a picture of a bloody journal. It'd be more symbolic than artistic.

    ReplyDelete
  48. The fact that people are protesting his release means that this is a big issue to everybody in Rhode Island. It is not often that people protest the release of someone from prison, so everybody must feel that he is a serious threat.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Jerzy makes a good point. Our court system definitly has some major flaws if a monster like this is being released from prison. Not only did he murder a child, but he raped, ate, and saved it! It is terrible to think that this guy good be a free man living among us soon.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I AGREE WITH JERZY like "early release" should not even be an option on a case like this are you kiddiing me....i don't understand what they dont get like even though he was sixteen years old at the time, if he was insane then he's more than likely to be insane now...

    ReplyDelete
  51. Tyge, I believe its lincoln park

    ReplyDelete
  52. Yes the picture also shows other peoples opinions towards htis man. He is bad and I don't believe that he should be released from prison but who am I to make that judgement.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Meredith Walsh:
I agree completely with Marissa. She made some good points about how he could be acting good.He really could be plotting a plan to rape, kill and eat again. He is a sick man and shouldn't be let out of prison at all.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I agree with Ryan. Just because he behaved well in jail does not mean he will outside of jail. I will not be surprised if he kills and eats another child.

    ReplyDelete
  55. This is a newsworthy story because it affects everyone. This man is being let out of jail and it is wrong. He should be sentanced for life after what he did and he is being let out early? that doesnt make sense and this affects everyone, because people should know who is out there so they can stay safe.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Another effective picture that could have been shown was maybe a photo of Woodmansee's mantel where the bones were once kept.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Another picture that theey could show in the future order to capture the scene will be him being let go and all of the protestors surrounding him being released. It will be interesting with all of the people yelling at him and all of the future chaos that will happen at this scene.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I agree with Jerzy. He should not be allowed to leave jail. He murdered a 5 year old and ate him, obviously he has some kind of mental disorder. How are people sure he won't kill annother person in a couple years. He should have been sentenced for life

    ReplyDelete
  59. YES!! Veiga that would be a good picture.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I do not think it is right for Woodmansee to be let out of jail early. It would have been smart to have given him life in jail. I strongly think that he has not changed from his past behaviors. This is a very odd story.

    ReplyDelete
  61. A another picture that could capture the essence of this article could be a picture of his little shrine that he had of the boy's bones or a picture of his journalism.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I agree with marissa. He has been holed up in jail for the majority of his life, he clearly already had issues, he should never see the light of day again.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Guys, everyone deserves a second chance...

    ReplyDelete
  64. I totally agree with marissa. He should not be let out at all, nevermind early! That is just messed up and he clearly can't be out in the normal world.

    ReplyDelete
  65. "I agree with jonathon. A lot of people get out of jail and then repeat a similar crime." -Ryan That is so true I watch alot of cold case file and American's most wanted and they do the same thing over and over again! Why have another person raped/murdered/eatten!

    ReplyDelete
  66. i think he should have "life without parol" or "life with a chance of parol" or whatever

    ReplyDelete
  67. Devin, i dont agree. This guy doesnt deserve to be let out AT ALL.

    ReplyDelete
  68. A guy who ate a child does not deserve a second chance...that's not even a human-like thing to do.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I agree with veiga. If any picture would be shown about this, it should be graphic. People should not be hiding from the truth, they need to confront it and do something about it

    ReplyDelete
  70. But, Devin, think about it. Hes criminally insane.

    ReplyDelete
  71. i think that a good picture would be of the kid. because parents wouldnt want this man back into society after what he did to that boy. Also i liked the picture that was for the article. it showed how many people didnt want this.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Not sure if I agree with that Devin..

    ReplyDelete
  73. A powerful picture to represent this picture, although it would be disgusting, would be a picture of the childs bones. It would show everyone how sick and preverted this man is and how he is preserving the poor childs bones like they're a trophy.. its just wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I disagree with Devin. Most people deserve a second chance, but I do not think that a rapist cannibal deserves a second chance.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I don't think they should release his journal. It is really gross to think someone would actually read it and enjoy it.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I do not see how they could give him good behavoir and release him early. He targets children because they are helpless and in prison he is in a completely different environment. There are no children for him to prey on, so he would act differently. If you ask me he should be evaluated and placed in a mental facility.

    ReplyDelete
  77. no problem Tyler. & i agree with Aislinn, when they had death row in RI, he should have been put on it.

    ReplyDelete
  78. marissa, he had life with a chance of parol and he got that chance. Thats what the article is about!

    ReplyDelete
  79. I agree with Veiga it would be very emotional. It'd show the brutality and the perverted nature of this guy. Keep him in jail.

    ReplyDelete
  80. i wonder why they would even allow this. well wasnt he a teen when he killed that boy. so maybe they are letting him out becuase they think that he is a changed man. after his behavior. but i dont think that he has. many pepole can fake being good. and all that.

    ReplyDelete
  81. oh that's embarressing for me then zach....

    ReplyDelete
  82. I agree with Zach. He lost his chance to get a second chance when he ate the child. That proves that he definetely has some kind of mental problem. If he didn't eat the child and put the bones on his mantle, I think he could still deserve a second chance

    ReplyDelete
  83. The pictures were powerful becasue people dont want this guy to get out and what the posters says were brutal.

    ReplyDelete
  84. A more powerful picture would of been of someone portraying this situation and pretending to do stuff he did.

    ReplyDelete
