Do some research on this topic after watching one of the videos-discuss why this is newsworthy (7 elements)
This is newsworthy because it shows human interest. There are alot of organizations driven by the love of animals, and they show it. It is wrong for people to not take care of their pet, then dump it off on someone else. More people need to have responsibility if they are going to get a dog, and if they can't be responsible, then they should not get a dog.
This story is very newsworthy because it is basically related to animal abuse and animal mistreatment. The people are trying to cheat their way out of justice by saying their neglected pets were abandoned by another person and that they tried to treat the animal.
Even though people shouldn't mistreat their dogs, atleast they have the decency to give it to the shelter or animal services rather than leaving it to die.
I think that this is very sad and that something should be done about this. They just create this stories and get rid of their pet without any consequence what-so-ever. These animals suffer and they didn't even do anything wrong, unlike their owners who are the ones neglecting them.
I agree with Devin too, because it is human interest. Even though animals aren't human they should be treated with respect, care and love. Animal cruelty isn't really something you hear about every day of the week. It is important to know about this animal dumping.
It's newsworthy cause it's in southern New England, Thousands of people have pets. I don't know anyone who doesn't have a pet, I do not know why someone would abandoned ther pet and then claim it's not theirs. I love my dog murphy!
This is newsworthy because it shows human interest and animal lovers will be the ones to read these types of stories. It is extremely wrong to have a pet and not take care of them. People should only have an animal if they can take the responsiblity of taking care of it.
This video was very newsworthy. A trend has started where pet owners take their animal that has become ill or experiencing health problems and get rid of it. This is being called pet dumping. People take their animal that is sick and say that they have found an abandoned animal and leave it at the shelter. This is just sad, if people want to have a pet they need to be responsible and prepared to take care of it.
This is newsworthy because it has to do with animal rights. No animal deserves to be treated this way and people that abuse their animals should be punished. In the newcast they said that after a while people with past abuse charges can own pets again and i think that there should be a law that says anyone who has been charged with animal abuse is not ever able to own a pet again. and i agree with Ryan. why do they have a pet in the first place when it is clear that they dont want it???
This can be a very controversial topic because now they need to decide whether or not they will punish the offenders of pet dumping. And then if they do decide to punish them, they need to come to a conclusion of how severe the punishment will be.
This is very unfortunate for the dogs because these people are acting animalistic themselves. There are SO MANY families or people that would be willing to accept a dog. If the dog has injuries or other impairing features, then do not do not do not abandon the dog. They didn't choose to have the problems they do.
This story is newsworthy because it has timeliness, people abandon their pets all the time, for one reason or another. It has proximity because it happens everywhere, in any town in any state, weather it's exposed or not, it happens. It represents consequence because it is illegal to abandon your pets, as well as tragic and horrible, but people do it anyways. Some way, some how, they eventually find out who the real owner is and come back to you, (as presented in the video, knocking on peoples doors and questioning them). This also has human interest because it would make anyone with a heart sad and upset, and people would want to hear about this because if the pet is saved and helped in time, and can be brought to a local shelter, someone may be looking to adopt or rescue a pet. This story has magnitude because it is important that "pet dumping" be stopped, because it is cruel and unjust.
Magnitude: This has an effect on all animal lovers and animal rights groups. Also, people could go to jail for animal mistreatment.
Human Interest: This is interesting because as humans we are inclined to basically love animals and it is very sad to see an innocent little dog suffering from something that it can't even control.
Uniqueness: Animal mastreatment is not uncommon in the news, but this is a new form of mistreatment where people try to drop their troubles onto someone else through the "Blame Game"
Proximity: This is happening in Southern New England.
Timeliness: It is a recent occurence, although something similar happened last year.
Prominence: Animal mistreatment always stands out because it is a domesticated animal that relies on humans for its lifestyle, and the human does not deliver, causing the animal to suffer
Consequence: The consequence of this is that people could go to jail. Also, some animals might die or suffer terribly, and the way we buy pets may change.
This in newsorthy because its happening in R.I everywhere. It seems like people are gettubg pets just to mistreat them. If you want a pet wouldnt you treat it right? and if you wouldnt why would you get it? Another thing i think is if they cant take care of a pet is that person capable of taking care of themselves?
This article is newsworthy because it is important for everyone to know about. It shows compasion, but it also sort of shows two sides of a story. It shows the animals side but it also shows the person who dumped the pet. I don't understand why people would ever do this to animals. I'm not a crazy animal lover or anything but you really have to be cold hearted to do this any creature, regardless if they can expess words of protest or not. What I don't understand is why they wouldn't find a solution to the problme; that they no longer want or can take care of their dog anymore.. This is why this article is newsworthy.
I agree with Devin. If they are going to dump their pet, they should do it the correct way and give to a shelter to adopt. This way the animal ahs a chance to get a new life.
I agree with Jaclyn, if some one has been charged with animal abuse, they should not be able to own a pet. I believe that they should not own a pet, unless they are positive they can take good care of it.
This story is newsworthy because it deals with animal abuse, which is looked down upon. Many families own pets these days so this attracts the attention of all pet-lovers. Proximity is also shown because "pet dumping" was discovered in New England. It is cruel and unnecessary.
I agree with jerzy, you should love your pet weather they're sick or hurt or not, if they were your pet in the first place what makes a difference if they're sick or hurt now? That doesn't give it any more right to just leave them to fend for themselves some place, it just makes it all the more wrong.
I believe this is news worthy because it is interesting to the reader/ viewer. It is horrible what people are doing to these precious animals and someone needs to do something about it.
This article is newsworthy because as almost everyone said, it involves human interest. It's disturbing that people would just dump their dogs in random places, like the dumpster. Dogs are living things and should be cared for. It's sad that people would do that to their own pets. I also agree with Devin, if your not going to treat a dog right? Why have one in the first place? People who are accused of animal dumping shouldn't be allowed to have other pets.
It's not even like this is happening somewhere else in the country. It's a very local thing and it's occuring right here in Rhode Island. So this story has proximity and we can do something to stop it if we really wanted.
I agree with Jerzy. This is very wrong and people need to take responsibility for their pets. Its not their fault their pet has injuries or poor features so they should not just "dump" them. There are many families out there that would love to have a dog or other pet and it is unfortunate to see these dogs wasting away because of neglectful owners when they could be in a caring home.
To answer johns question, the video said that these people usually just got a slap on the wrist and were allowed to own another animal with a clean record. But they are trying to get that changed.
This story is newsworthy because it relates to animal abuse and people are doing bad things to these animals. I agree with ryan why people get a dog or pet if they are just going to hurt it and mistreat it. This is important because it happens all around the world and even here in Rhode Island. Dogs are very popular and people like to have them and if someone mistreats one than they do not deserve a dog.
I agree with Jaclyn, really nobody should be able to own any pets after they are abused. They could get abused again and no animals should have to go through that.
Obviously these people are guilty, but how can authorities prove that they were actually the original owners of the pet? What if they were actually innocent?
After watching this video and doing a bit of research I can see just how wide-spread the problem of pet dumping is. People do it all the time but it is most frequent in the holiday season when money is just a bit tighter than usual. In 2007 a total of about 7,200 dogs were found and thats only the dogs! There are cats that suffer the same fate but are not accounted for. This is a very sick act and I believe that the people who do this if caught should not be allowed any other pets. Think about it! Would you do this with to children? This meets all criteria for newsworthiness. It is very timely. It happens all the time. It's very unique. It's not every day you hear about this. It's very prominent because so many people are affected. The affect on society is that some people will lose their right to own a pet and the dogs lose their life for no reason. This would interest anyone who owns a pet. The agnitude of this is all of the U.S. and parts of other countries. The proximity of this article is right in Rhode Island!
this video is newsworthy because it has human interset.. alot of people have animals and care alot for them but theres some that abuse there animals just because. why? i wish i new, but its not right at all. i aqree with jaclyn if you have a history of abusing people or animals you should be denyed to have any at all. theres really no excuse for abuse of any kind.. some people may be like there just animals but they hurt just like a human beging does so my thought is to treat them like they are humans
I agree with John. If a pet owner no longer wanted to keep their pet, they should find a way to get the pet a new home/owner instead of neglecting and abandoning it.
I liked how they went to question the person, and when they found out it was for Channel 10, they slammed the door in their face. That was a VERY stealthy approach to say "I'm guilty!"
Everyone's saying we can do something to stop it, but there are things to stop it, people just do it anyways. There are animal rights activists and other groups to stop animal abuse and neglect. Instead of abandoning the pet, you could give it to someone who may be looking, give it to a shelter, put ads up online or around town for someone to contact you if their interested, or as sad as it is, just put the pet to sleep if you really feel the need.
Jaclyn is right. People should not be able to own pets again if convicted of "dumping" their pets. If something happens to that animal they will treat it just as poorly as the last.
i disagree with michaela, i think this article is not only newsworthy for that point, but also because of the proximity of the matter, and the unhumane actions of people dumping their pets in a local dumpster. also jerzy brings up a really good point
Veiga is completely right, i found it odd that they just found out who the owner was and showed up at their door to question them. I feel like it's hard to find who the real owner was if a pet was just left somewhere and found by someone else (assuming there is no collar with name and address of residence) then how would they find out? It's confusing to me how they could find the owner.
well at least the people who felt guilly had a heart, but i still think that they should atleast admit what they done, and just take the price of there own actions.
this article is newsworthy because of its unique. the images that the video shows could easily attract the attention of anyone, not just pet owners. It's like showing pictures of a bloody war or massacre. It will definately cause people to take action
Animal dumping is most common in the holiday season. People are trying to save money for the holidays, but for what? Gifts for their children? Gifts for themselves? Well they do not understand that a pet is part of the family. They wouldn't sacrifice gifts for their children for this poor creature's life? What if it was the other way around? Would you buy your pet gifts and starve and beat your children, or even yourself?
also if the people really didnt do it. than take the interview and prove your case, that you treat animals well, if you slam the door into there face than well its obvious.
This story also focuses on consequence, or how the story affects the reader. Most people would be upset while reading this, because they care for animals unlike the distrubed who dump their pets off at places like the dumpster. Also a consequence of doing this to your pet, could be that the animal becomes greatly injured or perhaps dies..I agree with chris that this story should be taken seriously and it is very unhumane. And chris i didn't say that the article was only newsworthy....
I agree with Xinrui. These people should be punished. They were using things like money as an excuse, so why don't we use that against them? Rhode Island should make an example of these people! People would treat their animals better, even if they do not have much money, if they would get a $10,000 fine for mistreatment.
I think that there should be a licence that people must have in order to buy a pet. that way, people can see if they treat their pets right. If they get caught abusing the animal, the licence is taken away
I agree with Ryan, thats a very good quote for the situation. If the people accused of dumping their dogs, don't want to go to jail, why would they do that in the first place? They have to be willing to pay the consequence if they commit a crime.

ReplyDeleteThis really shows how stupid people are. IF YOU CAN'T CARE FOR AN ANIMAL DON'T TAKE IT! Come on where is the common sense and the morals.
ReplyDeletethis is newsworthy becuase its human interest many people have pets and love them and take good care of them, and people who just dont its wrong.
ReplyDelete@ jaclyn ....its against the law to abuse animals. its up there with beating children and the elderly
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jaclyn, if some one has been charged with animal abuse, they should not be able to own a pet. I believe that they should not own a pet, unless they are positive they can take good care of it.
ReplyDeleteDid anybody get charged or arrested for the treatment of the animals?
ReplyDeleteI agree with devin. This is a topic that is not only IMPORTANT enough to be in the news, but people are also INTERESTED to hear it.
ReplyDeleteThis story is newsworthy because it deals with animal abuse, which is looked down upon. Many families own pets these days so this attracts the attention of all pet-lovers. Proximity is also shown because "pet dumping" was discovered in New England. It is cruel and unnecessary.

ReplyDeleteTotally agree with 100% of what Ryan Connor has to say.

ReplyDeleteveiga the committers of these crimes should get more severe punishments for their actions
ReplyDeletealso when my family had a cat my mom was allergic but she still took really good care of yoshi.
ReplyDeleteIf sex offenders are made known to the public, so should animal abusers. And they should serve jail time. And they should be disallowed from animals.

ReplyDeleteHOLLY COW!! this is dead on. This is what my dog looks like except he has a 6th toe on his left foot
Jaclyn is right. People should not be able to own pets again if convicted of "dumping" their pets. If something happens to that animal they will treat it just as poorly as the last.

ReplyDeletePeople: Use some commen sense and DO NOT TAKE THE ANIMAL if you CANNOT TAKE CARE OF IT!
ReplyDeleteNice quote Ryan!
